Lindsay Turner
Lindsay Turner watched her dad’s health improve after bariatric surgery and nutrition modifications. His lifestyle changes inspired her to choose a career where she could help people see the power of nutrition and a tour of UK’s Department of Dietetics and Human Nutrition confirmed her decision to major in dietetics.
“After touring this department, I immediately felt at home by the smiling faces in the hallway and hearing about the success stories of previous graduates,” Turner said.
Since graduating in August 2019, she has been working as a registered dietitian at UK HealthCare in the Division of Pediatrics Genetics and Metabolism. There, she works with patients across the lifespan who have genetic disorders.
“This population is so rewarding to work with, because they depend on their dietitian to support them on a daily basis,” Turner said. “It is the perfect combination of clinical and community nutrition.”
While still a dietetics student, the clinical simulation exercise was one of her favorite classroom experiences. She said it helped her prepare for working with patients before starting her internship and RD career. Additionally, she contributes her success to the department professors who inspired her path forward.
“The professors used their real-life, professional experiences to shape their teaching and they took the time to get to know me, my strengths, weaknesses and interests,” Turner said. “They inspired me to feel confident in my ability to provide exceptional nutrition care during my first patient encounter, and I carry that with me to this day.”
Lindsay Turner found herself in a place where everything is possible and nothing is out of reach, and she shares some advice for future dietetics students.
“If you are passionate about people, food and science, look no further than the Department of Dietetics and Human Nutrition,” Turner said. “A career in this field is not only rewarding, but extremely fun. You will be poured into daily and walk away feeling confident in your ability to help make our world a healthier place. You will meet incredible mentors, gain a strong network and meet lifelong friends.”
