Haley Jones
Haley Jones came to UK from St. Louis, on the pre-medical track and chose human nutrition as her major, because she has a desire to understand holistic practices through nutrition.
“Human nutrition is the perfect combination of knowing what we should be consuming, why and how our food can prevent or cure diseases,” said Jones.
While earning her undergraduate degree, Jones practices applying the knowledge she’s gaining from the classroom to real-life situations, and she plans to spend the next year adding more volunteer and job shadowing experience to her resume before pursuing medical school.
When asked about her favorite class during her undergraduate degree, Jones said Nutritional Biochemistry with assistant extension professor Heather Norman-Burgdolf.
“Dr. Norman made a potentially challenging class into one of my favorites at UK,” said Jones. “I was so afraid to take it because of the rumors surrounding biochemistry, but she defied all the odds for me.”
Jones describes the faculty in human nutrition as standing out compared to her other pre-med courses.
“I enjoy that the program is small, because I can have a teacher more than once and get to know them as they get to know me and see me grow,” said Jones.
Jones says she would not trade her experiences in this major for anything and has some advice for future Wildcats.
“Join the human nutrition or dietetics major because we are family, and you will succeed,” said Jones.
